There is so much to discover in this wonderful building in the heart of the city of Amsterdam. The strict and formal architecture of the facade reveals a rich interior with sculptures and paintings. Built in the second half of the 17th century the Royal Palace was originally planned as the town hall.
Uncover the Palace's transformation
Many of the rooms have undergone remarkable transformations: the former prison now houses a wine cellar, the tax office is a guest room, and the citizens' hall has been reborn as a grand ballroom. However, you can still discern their original purposes from the painted ceilings, numerous marble reliefs, and grand paintings that adorn them. Even the hundreds of exquisite furnishings specially crafted for the building by the French King Louis I in 1808 still grace the palace's rooms. Don’t want to miss the chance to uncover the secrets and stories hidden within these historic walls? This guided tour with art historian Carien Kanters will take you on a journey through the rich and captivating history of the Royal Palace on Dam Square.
